CMOS: Sample Notes and Bibliography Citations

Notes and bibliography citations is one of the two ways used in the Chicago Manual of Style for citation. This article will provide some general citation examples for notes and bibliography citation in the Chicago style citation. Sample notes and bibliography citations

Books

Books are available today in either print or electronic form. The difference between the citation of both forms is that for online books provide the URL or DOI so the reader can clearly identify which form is this. Some books are in edited form or have been translated so you have to clearly specify any of that in the citation.

Print books

First Last Name, Book Title, (State: Publisher, Year), P-P.

First Last Name, First Last, Book Title, (State: Publisher, Year), P-P.

Bibliography

Last Name, First. Book Title. State: Publisher, Year. P-P.

Last Name, First, and First Last. Book Title. State: Publisher, Year. P-P.

Electronic books

For electronic book URL or DOI number should be given in the citation in the notes as well as in the bibliography. If URL or DOI is not present you can write the name of the website. You can also provide the format from where you have retrieved the ebook like Kindle, library database, pdf, free online book etc. Write the page numbers if they are there or if page numbers are not there write the chapter number or section title etc. For books that do not have author name write the name of the editor if it is there. The editor name should be followed by the abbreviation eds.

Chapters in a book

Notes

Bibliography

Book review

Book reviews are often published in newspapers, magazines or online. In a book review provide the name of the person reviewing the book, the title of the review, book title, author name, publisher of the review, and date.

Notes

First name Last, “Book Review Title,” Book Title, by Author name, Publisher of Review, Month Day, Year.

Bibliography

Last Name, First. “Book Review Title.” Book Title, by Author Name. Publisher of Review, Month Day, Year.

Journal

In a journal article list the author name, article title, journal title, volume number, issue number, date and page numbers. In online journal articles list the URL, DOI or domain name as well.

Four or more authors in a journal article

Notes

Bibliography

For bibliography you can list up to 10 authors but if there are more than 10 authors then list the first 7 authors followed by et al. 

Newspaper and magazine

Newspaper and magazines are published on a regular basis so you should list month day and year. For those magazines published monthly list month and year.

First Last Name, “News Title”, Newspaper Name, Month Day, Year, P.

Bibliography

Last Name, First. “News Title”, Newspaper Name. Month Day, Year.

Website article

In a website article you have to list all the possible citation elements that are present like, author name, article title, website title, date last renewed or published, page number, date accessed, URL. All of these elements are not present in every web article therefore you should list all those elements that are present.
